Join the Pop Culture Committee in a panel discussion on the importance of all types of representation in youth literature. We'll be joined by Kyle Lukoff (When Aidan Became a Brother, Call Me Max), Kelly Fernandez (Manu!), and esteemed librarian James Grzybowski. Our panelists will be responding to questions posed by our moderator, but we will have time for a Q&A at the end, so please bring any questions you may have! In a time when books representing varying perspectives are actively being challenged and banned, these types of conversations are more important than ever.

Kyle Lukoff is the author of many books for young readers. A bookseller, librarian, to writer, his debut middle-grade novel, Too Bright To See, received a Newbery honor, the Stonewall award, and was a National Book Award finalist. His picture book When Aidan Became A Brother also won the Stonewall. Kyle's most recent work is the new middle grade novel, Different Kinds of Fruit.

Kelly Fernández is a cartoonist who was born and raised in Queens, New York. Her family is from the Dominican Republic, whose folklore and culture she draws inspiration from. Her debut middle grade graphic novel, Manu!, has received starred reviews from Kirkus and Booklist. Kelly is a local librarian in Nassau County.

James Grzybowski is a Children’s Librarian at Uniondale Public Library. James’ mission as a librarian is to continue to spotlight, connect, and serve everyone in the communities we work for. In all aspects of his work, he emphasizes the importance of representing diverse groups in library materials, programs, and services while creating a safe space for the community.
